Through Annual Dividends, MTL Passes on a Portion of its Earnings to You
One major difference between a publicly held insurance company and a mutual one is priorities. Mutual Trust Financial Group is not publicly traded, so you—our policy owners—rather than shareholders, share in our ownership.
A policy dividend is a share of a company's earnings after it has set aside the funds required to cover its contractual obligations and operating, contingency and business expenses. Dividends are not guaranteed nor required by law, but MTL Insurance Company has paid them for more than 100 years. This year, MTL's Board of Directors has approved paying owners of participating* MTL policies a projected total of $13.7 million in dividends.
Dividend Options
Policy owners can choose how to apply their dividends. Options include:
• Paid in cash,
• Used to reduce the premium due,
• Left on deposit with the insurance company to earn interest,
• Used to purchase paid-up insurance,
• Used to purchase one-year term insurance, or
• Some combination of the above.
Policy owners also have the flexibility to change these options as their needs change.
Dividend Scale
The Board of Directors sets MTL's dividend scale each year. In general, dividends are a function of the experience of the company and depend on the company's investment income, mortality experience and expense levels. While MTL's mortality experience and expense levels have remained consistent, low interest rates continue to adversely affect investment income for everyone.
MTL's Commitment to You
MTL takes great pride in delivering you outstanding guaranteed values. Although dividends are not required nor guaranteed, we view them as an important added benefit to the policy guarantees of our participating whole life products. Our more than century-long record of consistently paying dividends confirms our commitment to you, our policy owners.
*Due to the pricing structure of term and universal life policies and annuities, MTL does not pay dividends on these products.
